Netflix vs Prime Video vs Hotstar (2026): Which Should You Actually Keep?

·4 min read·Updated 2 June 2026

Most Indian households now pay for two or three streaming apps without ever comparing what they’re actually getting. You keep Netflix because you started it during a lockdown, Prime Video because it “comes with” fast delivery, and JioHotstar because of cricket season — and you never stop to ask if you use all three enough to justify ₹1,000-1,500 a month combined.

This is a straight comparison of pricing, content strength, and who each service is actually worth it for, so you can cut at least one before your next billing cycle.

Current pricing (verify before you decide)

Streaming prices in India change often, especially around IPL and marquee sports seasons, so treat these as a starting point and check the app before you commit.

Plan Netflix Prime Video JioHotstar
Mobile-only ₹149/month Bundled with Prime (₹299/month or ₹1,499/year) ₹149/quarter (limited)
Basic/HD ₹199/month ₹499/quarter
Standard (2 screens, Full HD) ₹499/month ₹899/year
Premium (4 screens, 4K) ₹649/month ₹1,499/year

Prime Video is bundled into the broader Amazon Prime membership, which is the single biggest thing people forget when comparing costs — you’re not paying for video alone, you’re paying for shipping, Prime Music, and Prime Reading too.

What each app is actually good for

Netflix wins on Originals and international content — Korean dramas, prestige English-language series, and a genuinely large back catalog of licensed Bollywood and regional films. If you watch a lot of non-Indian content, this is the one to keep.

Prime Video has quietly become strong on Indian Originals (crime thrillers, small-town dramas) and has decent regional-language libraries in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam. Its real value is the Prime bundle — if you already order from Amazon weekly, the video app is close to free.

JioHotstar (the merged HotStar/JioCinema entity) is the only one of the three with live sports, including IPL and international cricket, plus same-day access to a huge chunk of Star/Disney TV content and HBO/Max shows under licensing deals. If cricket season is the only reason you’re subscribed, a quarterly plan timed to IPL is cheaper than staying subscribed year-round.

Ad-supported tiers change the math

All three platforms now push cheaper, ad-supported plans harder than they used to. Netflix’s ad tier and JioHotstar’s ad-supported plans can undercut the ad-free price by 30-50%, and for casual viewers who mainly have the app on as background noise, the ad interruptions are a reasonable trade for the savings. Prime Video has also introduced ads on its default tier in several markets, meaning “ad-free” is increasingly something you pay extra for rather than the default — check your current plan, since you may already be paying for ad-free without needing it.

A simple decision framework

Ask yourself three questions before renewing any of these:

  1. Did I open this app in the last 14 days? If not, that’s a strong signal to cancel, not pause.
  2. Am I paying for a bundle I’d keep anyway? Prime Video piggybacking on Prime shipping is different from paying for video alone — don’t double-count that cost as “wasted.”
  3. Is there a seasonal reason I need this right now? JioHotstar during IPL, Netflix during a specific show’s release — subscribe for the season, cancel after.

Track every subscription in one place instead of guessing what you're paying for.

Our take

For most Gen Z and Millennial households juggling three or more apps, the highest-value combination is usually one broad-catalog app (Netflix or Prime Video) plus JioHotstar only during cricket season. That alone can cut ₹400-600/month without losing anything you actually watch.

If you’re the kind of household that watches sports year-round and doesn’t care much about Originals, JioHotstar’s annual plan alone may cover 80% of your viewing at a lower total cost than two subscriptions.

FAQ

Can I share one account across a joint family? All three apps now enforce household/device limits and charge extra for “add-a-member” or extra screens outside your primary location, so sharing across cities is riskier and pricier than it used to be — factor that in before assuming a shared plan is cheaper per person.

Do these apps offer student discounts? Not directly in India as of this writing, though occasional bundle offers appear through telecom partners (Jio, Airtel). Check your telecom app before paying full price — you may already have a subscription bundled into your mobile plan.

Is it worth annual billing? Only if you’re confident you’ll use the app for the full year. Annual plans lock in a lower per-month rate but remove your ability to cancel mid-year when your viewing habits change — which, per our BNPL and subscription-leak research, happens more often than people expect.
